Steven A. Jones

Marine Surveyor

Steve’s’ father had a boat shop in the South Bay of Los Angeles, and Steve began sailing a Sabot at age 8. His dad Alan built wood and composite racing dinghies and small boats and Steve worked in the boat shop after school. Later the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.

After serving in the Coast Guard on Buoy Tenders in the Pacific and performing search and rescue in San Francisco Bay, Steve ran the Sausalito Marine Ways yard hauling and repairing yachts and fishing boats. In 1981 he opened his own boat shop: Steve’s Marine in Sausalito. There he specialized in marine cabinetry, wooden decks, spars and general boat repair including electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, mechanical and electronic systems.

In addition, Steve has extensive blue water experience, having lived aboard and sailed ocean sailing yachts for seventeen years and 35,000 miles of ocean passages. He held a U.S. Coast Guard 100 ton Captain’s license, worked in the boat charter business, and delivered many boats in both the Atlantic and Pacific.

In 2010 Steve closed his boat shop, and with his wife cruised the East Coast, the Caribbean, Panama, and Mexico for several years. He returned to the Bay Area in 2015, and became an Accredited Marine Surveyor of the Society of American Marine Surveyors and a Certified Marine Systems Technician of the ABYC.

Steve is happy to bringing his years of sailing, cruising, boat repair and survey experience to help you understand and evaluate your own vessel, or a new one!
